Java Applet (Serial Port comm via RxTx library) with JavaScript Wrapper - oDesk

Job Description

This is a small, short-term project. We require the development of a (signed) Java applet which encapsulates the RxTx Library and exposes a JavaScript API to support text-line-based interaction with a device connected to a computer's serial port. (The device in practice will be a GPS receiver, but you could test this with an old-school analog modem's AT-command set, for example)



The API will have a few commands, like "enumeratePorts", "openPort", "sendText", ... and will provide the ability to register a callback for information received from the serial device.



It is possible for us to require the user to manually install the required native-code binaries for RxTx.



Additional information

The applet will run on Windows and needs to support the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, and IE9. No specific restrictions on the version of JDK, so you can assume that the user has the newest JRE version available.



Please note: To develop/test this Applet, access to a serial port device will be necessary. (For example an old-school analog modem which can be interacted with using AT-commands)

Contractor requirements

------------------------------

I would require a skilled Java developer who has created signed Applets (with doPrivileged API) before and knows the steps required to achieve this level of browser-integration for native code in underlying libraries. Plus if RxTx-experience, but this library should not be hard to learn.



I would prefer a self-driven developer who can make individual decisions without the need for "micro-management". Preferred means of communication is email.
